A compact between the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and Governor Patrick becomes official today. Last month the tribe won federal approval to pursue a casino in Taunton. The agreement has the tribe paying the state anywhere from zero to 21-percent of its gaming revenue depending upon the level of competition. The tribe will pay nothing if the Mass Gaming Commission licenses another resort casino in Southeastern Mass. Foxwoods and KG Urban Enterprises have proposed casinos in Fall River and New Bedford.
