Fall River police officer John Riley made his approach towards a car to order it to be moved because it was parked in a fire lane at Walmart in Fall River.

However, what Riley saw next inside the car would lead to the vehicle’s three occupants being arrested on marijuana distribution charges.

According to The Herald News, on Wednesday at around 5:20pm, Riley stated that he saw the car parked in the fire lane near the front entrance at Walmart, located at 638 Quequechan Street. He went to tell the driver to move it when he looked in the window and saw the operator, identified as 18 year-old, Jesse Soares, of 145 Ridge Street, looking down at his lap, where Riley reported seeing a plastic bag containing a large amount of a green, leafy substance, known to be marijuana.

Riley then knocked on the window and that’s when Soares looked up to spot Riley and threw the bag on the floor.

Soares also had an active arrest warrant for an assault and battery with dangerous weapon charge after obtaining his drivers license and registration. “After calling for backup, Riley and other police officers removed Soares and two other men from the vehicle: Devin Travers, 20, 104 Hood Street, and Cory Barboza, 18, 270 Mulberry Street.”

Police then searched the vehicle and found a large bag of marijuana underneath the front passenger seat, packaging materials, and a replica black revolver in the glove compartment. Police also seized $175 in cash from Travers and $68 in cash from Soares as suspected drug trades.

“Arraigned Thursday in Fall River District Court, Barboza and Travers were released on personal recognizance while a judge set a $500 cash bail for Soares. All three are charged with possession to distribute a Class D drug and conspiracy to violate the drug laws. They are scheduled to return to court for pretrial hearings on February 12.”
