Fall River Fatal Accident

Fall River Police are investigating after an 87-year-old woman was struck and killed by a pickup truck while trying to cross a busy city street over the weekend.

Police say Carmelia Melo was trying to cross Broadway at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday when she was struck by a Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by an 18-year-old city man. She was taken to Saint Anne's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The accident remains under investigation and preliminary findings show that speed was not a factor. No citation for motor vehicle infractions has yet been issued, pending the completion of the investigation.
