FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A Fall River man charged with passport fraud and identity theft was indicted yesterday by a federal grand jury in Boston.

Arias Mejia, 43, was indicted for misuse of a Social Security number, aggravated identity theft, and making a false statement in an application for a United States passport.

Mejia was previously charged with a criminal complaint on December 8, 2023.

As a citizen of the Dominican Republic, Mejia allegedly applied for a United States passport and a Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Real ID using the name and other biographical information of a resident of Puerto Rico.

The stolen identity was allegedly used by Mejia when he was previously arrested, charged, and convicted in several state court cases.

He has remained in federal custody since his arrest and will appear in federal court in Boston at a later date.
