UPDATE: President Trump ordered the White House flag to return to half-staff until Sen. John McCain's internment.

As a supporter of President Trump, I'm completely turned off by the wrongheaded decision to follow flag protocol to the letter following the death of Senator John McCain.

Please, save the excuses. While technically in line with protocol, the White House's quick return to full-staff wasn't the right thing to do. The president has many times ordered the flag to remain at half-staff for an extended period after a loss of national figures and non-national figures, like he did with former First Lady Barbara Bush and victims of mass shootings.

This isn't about protocol; it's about grieving a mortal individual with a soul. Flying the flag at half-staff for only the bare minimum amount of time in honor of McCain, for whom President Trump openly shared his disdain, feels personal.

I'm going to get off my soap box in a minute, but I believe that leadership and good management are at play in this flag matter. Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right thing.
