Many Southcoast residents may experience breathing problems Wednesday due to poor air quality.

The EPA says ground-level ozone is expected to lead to poor air quality in Southeastern Massachusetts, including the Cape and Islands.

In addition to breathing problems the poor air quality can also aggravate asthma and other pre-existing lung diseases, making people more susceptible to respiratory infections.

People are being advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially those who may be sensitive such as children and adults with respiratory problems.

Ground-level ozone is formed when volatile organic compounds and oxides of oxygen interact in the presence of strong sunlight.
