Denis Lawrence Jr. Will Not Seek Re-Election
A long term member of the New Bedford City Council says he will not seek re-election this fall.
Denis Lawrence Jr. announced on his Facebook page on Tuesday that after much soul-searching and discussions with his family, he will withdraw from the At-Large race.
Lawrence has served eight terms on the Council. He's been elected City Council President, and is the current chairman of the Ordinance Committee.
Lawrence said he's humbled by the support given him over the years by New Bedford voters, but said it was time to move on to a different phase of his life.
Lawrence has been mentioned as a possible candidate for City Clerk, should City Clerk Rita Arruda decide to retire.
