The Town of Dartmouth is moving ahead with plans to build the only handicapped accessible dog park in the region.

Diane Camacho, of the Dartmouth Dog Advisory Work Group, tells WBSM's Phil Paleologos the town opened the project to bids Wednesday night.

Camacho says once it is completed the park will be open to both residents and non-residents of Dartmouth.

However, Camacho says they will charge a fee which will help to keep the park self-sustaining.

"It's members could actually fund the maintenance of the park," says Camacho "so we're looking at a nominal annual membership fee for members that are town residents as well as non-residents."

Camacho also says that a key card entry system will be put in place so that only members will be allowed access to the park, ensuring the safety of the dogs and their owners.

"We can assure that the dogs that are in the park have been innoculated, and are safe with other dogs, and also gives us a little more security to know who's going in and out," says Camacho.

The town has opened the bidding process for contractors, and all those interested in submitting a bid must do so by June 5th.

More information, about the dog park is available at the town's website.
