If you're looking to learn basic seamanship skills – or if you'd like reduced rates on your boat insurance – a series of boating and sailing classes offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxilliary could be of interest.

The public education classes will be held on 14 Mondays at 80 Middle St. in Fairhaven from 7-9 p.m. A fee of $45 will cover course materials, including a book and chart. Some family discounts are available.

The classes will be taught by mariners with years of experience on local waters, and organizers say both the novice and the experienced boater or sailor can benefit.

The lessons will cover boating and sailing terminology, boat equipment, boat handling, boat trailering, lake boating, rules of the road, navigation, medical and safety awareness, weather, engines, radios, and how to read a chart, buy a boat, tie a knot, and call in a mayday emergency.

Many insurance companies offer discounts on boat insurance to individuals who successfully complete the course. Interested parties may register online at www.flotilla65.com, or by contacting Mary Beth Soares at
mbsoares11@verizon.net.
