Coakley: Protections Still Exsist Around Abortion Clinics

Attorney General Martha Coakley is reminding patients and protesters of the legal protections that still exist around abortion clinics even after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruled the Massachusetts’ 35-foot buffer zone law unconstitutional.

Coakley said Friday that women continue to have basic rights to seek reproductive health care free from harassment and intimidation.

Among the laws that remain is the Massachusetts Civil Rights Act that bars the use of threats, intimidation, or coercion to interfere with the exercise of a right, and the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act that prohibits the use of force or the threat of force to interfere with access to reproductive health care facilities.

Coakley also noted Thursday’s ruling left intact the portion of the buffer zone law prohibiting individuals from obstructing access to reproductive health care facilities.
