New Bedford streets are getting safer, at least according to the latest numbers released on Friday.

The release says that violent crime declined by 13% as compared to the same time last year. Shootings are also down 35%.

Mayor Jon Mitchell credits the police department and its willingness to work with people in the neighborhoods.

"[Police] do a good job reaching out and developing relationships in neighborhoods in order to stay on top of neighborhood safety," said Mitchell.

Mayor Mitchell says that per capita New Bedford's crime rate is lower than providence's and roughly comparable to Boston.

City Council President Brian Gomes agrees that things are getting better, but more remains to be done.

"Hearing that report come out today is very encouraging but the work is not done. We have to continue to go out on the streets, take the criminals off the streets, and bring back some of the areas that have been diminished by their criminal activity to make our city a greater place," Gomes said.
