Canadian authorities say they've foiled a major al-Qaeda-supported terror plot targeting rail service between Toronto and New York City.

An official with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said two people were arrested for allegedly conspiring to derail a VIA passenger train.

The official said the attack would have killed or injured innocent people if it was carried out.

He emphasized that though the suspects had the capacity and intent to carry out the attack, there was no imminent threat against the public.

The two suspects are Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser.  They're charged with conspiracy to carry out an attack and conspiracy to murder at the behest of a terrorist group.
