Atlanta Radio Hosts Make Fun of Steve Gleason, and End up Fired
Former NFL player Steve Gleason is in the late stages of ALS, a debilitating disease that has taken everything away from him – including his ability to speak. A few Atltant radio hosts thought it would be funny to poke fun at the situation, and it has cost them.
There is a fin line between funny and offensive. 790 The Zone in Atlanta crossed that line, and sprinted 400 meters from it during this bit. Steve Gleason, who most recently wrote an article from Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback with Peter King.
Gleason, who has no ability to speak besides through a computer that gives his responses. ALS has taken his ability to use his muscles, but he is still very smart and coherent. So this bit done by The Zone’s morning show is highly offensive. Listen to it below:
Almost immediately following the vet, The Zone issued the following statement on their Facebook page:
We deeply regret the comments made by Mayhem In The AM this morning on 790 The Zone regarding former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason. 790 The Zone, Lincoln Financial Media, our sponsors and partners in no way endorse or support the unfortunate and offensive commentary concerning Mr. Gleason this morning. The members of the show involved with this incident have been suspended indefinitely pending further management review of their actions.
According to Deadspin, the hosts of the morning show and all involved in the prank have been fired as a result.
