New Bedford Police have arrested a man in connection with a Friday afternoon robbery.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says a man armed with a machete entered the Subway Shop located at 109 Nauset St. at approximately 2:45 p.m.

The man went behind the counter and ordered the employee to open the register before he fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

An officer located the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Harold Gierbolini, along with a machete and shirt that had been removed.

He was brought back to the store where employees identified Gierbolini as the man who robbed them.

Vicente says Gierbolini had been in the store earlier in the day asking for job applications, apparently as ruse to case the store.

Gierbolini was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in New Bedford District Court on a charge of armed robbery.

The money was returned to the store.
