An after-school basketball program for young people in New Bedford is looking for community support to continue.

The program began this year at the urging of community activist John "Buddy" Andrade who lobbied school officials for the use of the Gomes School in the South End.

Speaking on WBSM's Townsquare Sunday, Andrade says the program has brought together kids from all over the city.

"We consider the program a success," said Andrade. "These kids come from all over the city, white, black, latino groups and they're playing ball. You hear the different languages and conversations and they're all getting along."

Andrade also has high praise for School Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin, the School Committee and Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro for their support.

Now Andrade's organization is trying to raise $10,000 to expand the program beyond basketball and to cover the cost of keeping the school building open.
