The YMCA has over 17,000 members across the Southcoast. The organization's mission is to promote the health of individuals within it's community, from spiritual to physical. It's more than what the Village People sang so enthusiastically about.

The YMCA provides services to families on the Southcoast that make up a wide spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds. One of their most crucial services provided to our community is child care. Any family who has borne the cost of day care or after school programs, knows just how pricey dependable care can be. The YMCA is able to provide memberships and services to citizens with financial assistance through grants and of course through donations from community partners like the Southcoast Business Alliance. They never turn a family away due to inability to pay.

The SCBA's mission is also to improve the Southcoast through fundraising efforts that benefit a wide variety of organizations that support education and betterment of youth in the community. Some of their major annual fundraisers include an annual golf tournament and the New Bedford Oktoberfest on state pier. Often approached, the Southcoast Business Alliance does its best to provide donations and financial support to as many programs that help reinforce its own mission. So support to the YMCA was inevitably a perfect match.

This week, the staff at New Bedford's YMCA, met with the SCBA to show them how their donation would be used. In the past year alone, the YMCA Southcoast saw a 42% increase in families with need for subsidized child care and services. The $2,000.00 donation will provide scholarships to families and children ineligible for state funding, in need of child care, with inability to pay.
