A female passenger in a Chrysler sedan died Sunday night following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 195 in Seekonk.

According to a preliminary investigation by Massachusetts State Police, a 2019 Chevy Silverado pickup truck had passed Exit 1 around 8 p.m. and was traveling in the middle eastbound lane. The operator encountered slowing traffic due to a car fire one mile down the road. The operator hit his brakes and collided into the rear of a 2001 Chrysler 300. The Chrysler was pushed into the rear of a 2005 Acura TSX, which was then pushed into the rear of a 2017 Lexus NX.

The belted, right-rear female passenger of the Chrysler was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and she was pronounced dead soon after her arrival, state police said in a media release.

Two additional occupants of the Chrysler, the two occupants of the Silverado, and the four occupants of the Acura were all transported by EMS to area hospitals with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
The operator of the Lexus was not injured.

Police said information about the victims is not being released at this time.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police, the MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the MSP Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Bristol County.
