As we get ready for fireworks and barbecues to mark the Fourth of July this week, it's a good idea to remember to be careful on the road, including having a designated driver if necessary.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that Independence Day is the deadliest day of the year for American drivers. According to data from the organization, over 670 people were killed in car accidents on July 4th between 2007 and 2011.

That amounts to 134 deaths per Fourth of July, some 40 more than is average for any normal day.
