The New Bedford Whaling Museum is assisting the Ministry of Culture in Cape Verde with the opening of two museums honoring the contributions of Cape Verdeans to the whaling industry and American life.

Ceremonies were held last weekend and earlier this week, celebrating the opening of the museums and their partnership with the Whaling Museum.

New Bedford Tourism Director Dagny Ashley was part of the city delegation in Cape Verde.

"It was so exciting to be there and see New Bedford placed in those exhibits. Visitors and their communities will learn more about whaling and about New Bedford and how culturally linked we are." said Ashley.

Among the items donated by the Whaling Museum were three ship models, whaling tools, information about New Bedford's Cape Verdean community and dozens of photos.
