WESTPORT (WBSM) — The Federal Bureau of Investigations has confirmed that the agency currently has a presence in Westport.

According to spokesperson Kristen M. Setera of the FBI’s Boston Division, the agency’s Evidence Response Team is on the scene at Route 88 in Westport in connection with an ongoing, multi-jurisdictional investigation.

Residents had reported seeing people in FBI-branded clothing searching the wooded area off the side of the road over the past few days.

“We are searching for specific evidence and there is no threat to public safety,” Setera told WBSM.

Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and the Westport Police Department are providing assistance.

“We recognize the traffic disruptions this may cause, and we are working as expeditiously as possible,” Setera said. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we conduct this important law enforcement activity.”

Setera said as it is an ongoing investigation, no further details can be released at this time.

A Look Inside Westport's Historic Handy House

Westport's Handy House is a 2.5-story wood frame structure with a side-gable roof and clapboard exterior. The house was built in the early 1700s, somewhere between 1710 and 1713, and was occupied by various residents until its most recent owner Eleanor Tripp passed away in August 2003 at 93 years old.
