Wareham Department of Natural Resources Explains Building Materials at Onset Pier

Folks driving by the Onset Pier have seen a crane and building materials and may be wondering about the future of that structure. Are they tearing it down? Are they making repairs?

As it turns out, the materials being delivered are for other projects, according to a Facebook post from the Wareham Department of Natural Resources.

“The Onset Pier has deep water access, which makes it a safe area for contractors to load and unload materials under the direction of the Harbormaster, which they have been given permission to do,” the Wareham DNR posted on the page, which is administered by Harbormaster Garry Buckminster. “This is one of the many purposes the Onset Pier serves.”

In 2018, Wareham voters approved spending up to $250,000 of Community Preservation Act funds for an engineering study of a potential rebuild of Onset Pier. The Wareham DNR pointed out in its post that these materials are not part of that planned rebuild.

“The materials that are being temporarily stored are not part of the Onset Pier Project,” the DNR wrote. “They are for various approved and permitted private waterways projects and investments going on in town. The materials are loaded onto barges and moved to the projects as the materials become needed.”

According to the Wareham DNR, all of the materials will be off the pier before the boating and beach season begins.

The Onset Pier is a popular spot for fishing, boating and for getting aboard the Cape Cod Canal cruises that take place during the summer.
