Two men were transported to the Level 1 Trauma Center at Rhode Island Hospital after their motorcycles crashed on Rt. 140 northbound in Lakeville.

Two motorcycles collided around 5 p.m. Sunday evening right before the Rt. 79 Myricks exit, according to a social media post from the Lakeville Fire Department.

As firefighters headed toward the scene, Massachusetts State Police informed them that the motorcyclists were badly injured. First responders found two men down. They were rushed to the hospital via Lakeville Ambulance. The Taunton Fire Department and Brewster Ambulance provided support at the scene, the Lakeville Fire Department said.

It's not clear why the two motorcyclists crashed and went down. State police Monday afternoon declined to confirm that the motorcycles had collided with each other and said the crash is under investigation.

Sgt. Paul Sullivan of Massachusetts State Police Media Relations said that a 25-year-old New Bedford man riding a 2012 Yamaha YZF R1 sustained suspected serious injuries, and that and a 22-year-old New Bedford man riding a 2008 Honda CVR 1000 sustained suspected minor injuries in the crash, which took place just north of Exit 9 on Rt. 140. Sullivan confirmed that both parties were transported to Rhode Island hospital.
