NEW BEDFORD — Multiple emergency responders are on the scene of an accident involving an 18-wheeler and a pickup truck.

Massachusetts State Police say the accident took place at around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday as an 18-wheeler jackknifed in the area of Exit 16 on 195 Eastbound in New Bedford. As the truck jackknifed, a pickup truck collided with the 18-wheeler.

The accident caused the 18-wheeler's fuel tank to rupture, spilling what State Police estimate to be 200 to 300 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway, and presumably into the Acushnet River, just below where the accident took place.

No injuries were reported in the accident.

Massachusetts State Police, as well as HazMat crews from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection are on the scene to clear the accident and contain and clean up the spilled fuel.

The accident has traffic backed up past Rt. 140 and towards Faunce Corner Road in Dartmouth.
