Rhode Island's Green Airport Getting $64 Million Terminal Upgrade

Rhode Island's T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick has become my "go-to" airport for traveling. Green is closer to me than Boston Logan International Airport, parking at Green is less expensive, and traffic is less of a nightmare.

T.F. Green is also a nice, easy-to-use-sized airport, recently voted the No. 1 domestic airport by Travel + Leisure.

One reader told the publication, "The design of the small airport lends itself to quick check-in and security ease. The place is kept clean and has adequate restaurants for its size, and is adding more."

"There is plenty of parking and it's not outrageously expensive," the reader said.

$64 Million Terminal Upgrades Announced

T.F. Green is about to get even nicer.

Providence-based WPRI-TV reported, "Rhode Island's T.F. Green Airport is set to undergo $64 million in terminal upgrades."

What Changes Travelers Can Expect

Rhode Island Airport Commission President Bill Fischer told WPRI that the next phase focuses on "modernizing the terminal to better accommodate growing passenger traffic." Fischer said improvements will include upgrades to walls, ceilings, lighting, and seating.

The terminal has not been upgraded in 30 years.

Uncertain Future for Sailboat Display

You may have noticed the display of sailboats in the terminal at T.F. Green, built by Bristol's Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, including a rather large boat that has welcomed travelers to Rhode Island for years. The boat's future is uncertain as planning for remodeling is set to begin.

Fischer told WPRI the sailboat may have to be relocated, though discussions about its future "remain ongoing and are at this point premature."

Airport officials will know more once the redesign plans are finalized.
