The Bourne Rotary has been closed following a tanker crash late Tuesday night.

Massachusetts State Police say a preliminary investigation has revealed that the tanker, which was carrying roughly 11,500 gallons of gasoline, had crossed the Bourne Bridge around 11:00 p.m.

It is believed the truck then crossed into a grass field, instead of the traffic circle, crashed, and rolled onto its side.

The driver, identified as a 47-year-old Westport man, was able to free himself from the crash and he was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

State Police say the fuel spill has ceased but crews from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection are still on scene and the rotary is expected to remain closed through the morning commute.

Cross-canal traffic is being diverted to the Sagamore Bridge and Cape area commuters are being advised to plan accordingly and leave extra time.
