After several years of grappling with the dangers of synthetic drugs in the city, the New Bedford Board of Health adopted new regulations Thursday to implement an outright ban on the sale of the substances effective immediately.

According to South Coast Today.com, the city of New Bedford is “looking to ban synthetic drugs or man-made, chemically laced substances, known as K2, spice or potpourri from local store shelves.”

Over a dozen states have passed laws banning synthetic cannabis, but Massachusetts isn't one of them.

There's a drug many teenagers know about, but few parents and grandparents do! It's called SPICE or K2, a synthetic form of marijuana, and is said to give the user a marijuana-like high. But the drug has more dangerous side-effects than weed. And the drug is available readily because it is sold as potpourri or incense in convenient stores and smoke shops.

The synthetic drugs known as "Herbal Incense", "K2", and a variety of names are being sold in stores throughout New Bedford, but the City Council is hoping to stop that practice.
