A story that came out Tuesday afternoon claiming that the MBTA is halting work on the city's South Coast Rail branch is patently false, according to local officials.
State transportation officials told New Bedford residents at a Tuesday community meeting that the long-promised South Coast Rail project is nearing the halfway point, and could start carrying passengers by the end of 2023.
The SouthCoast Rail project is still alive.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is proposing $148 million in funding for the project over the next five years, with a final vote to be taken next month.
