SWAT Team Called to Westport Home for Armed Man, Suspect Found Dead
WESTPORT - A man is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a domestic disturbance in Westport.
Westport Police responded to a home in the area of 1300 Main Road in the town just before 10 p.m. Saturday night. Upon arrival, a woman exited the home and told police that her husband had assaulted her with a firearm. The woman was unsure if her husband was still inside the house, or had fled into the wooded area behind the dwelling.
Dartmouth Police Officers were called to the scene for assistance, and the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC) SWAT Team was also called to the scene along with the Massachusetts State Police helicopter.
Officers established a perimeter around the property, and less than ten minutes later a single gunshot rang out.
State Police, using infrared technology, were able to locate the suspect close to the home. SWAT Team personnel made their way to his reported location and found the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was recovered.
State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office also responded to the scene and coordinated the investigation once the suspect was found. The Chief Medical Examiner was also present.
