Suspect Arrested in New Bedford Double Shooting
NEW BEDFORD — A suspect in this morning’s double shooting in the city’s West End has been arrested.
According to police, this morning at approximately 10:30 a.m., officers responded to a shooting incident in the area of Adams and Reynolds Streets. Two victims were shot and transported to St. Luke’s Hospital. Police have not provided any information about their condition.
Shawn Badgley, spokesman for Southcoast Health, confirmed to WBSM News that St. Luke's Hospital was under a brief lockdown this morning related to the shooting.
Police say they identified a suspect after responding to the incident. While attempting to take him into custody, they say the suspect fired at police. No officer was struck, and the suspect was placed under arrest. He has been identified as 18-year-old John Zell of 18 Cottage Street in Marion (Editor's Note: a later press release from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office has identified him as 18-year-old Jon Zell of Mattapoisett).
Police say the investigation remains active.
