A “Sobriety Checkpoint” will be in effect in Bristol County this weekend.

Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Richard McKeon says the checkpoint begins on Friday and runs until Saturday.

The “Sobriety Checkpoint” will be operated during varied hours on a public way.

McKeon says safety will be assured, inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety, and that the selection of vehicles won't be arbitrary.

The stated purpose of the excercise is to " further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways."

Funding for the "Sobriety Checkpoint" is being provided by a grant from the Highway Safety Division of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
