‘SNL': All You Need For Valentine’s Day is a Trip to CVS
The best of 'SNL''s commercial parodies are always those that make you cringe a little. Not because they're bad, but because you recognize just enough painful truth in them to dredge up a memory or two. With Valentine's Day around the corner, the most recent episode of everyone's favorite late night variety show tackled a subject that should be familiar to anyone who has ever been in a relationship: forgetting to get a gift for your loved one.
Of course, it's not just about forgetting a gift -- it's about forgetting a gift and making a desperate run to your local CVS in order to find something, anything, to save face. But since this is CVS and not a store where thoughtful people buy great gifts, everything that's available just plain stinks, from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles chocolate to tacky jewelry to a balloon that plays "Mambo Number Five." Although it's definitely an exaggeration, the details feel completely right. Yes, this is the kind of tacky junk that your local CVS does carry.
As amusing as the whole commercial is, our own Britt Hayes is correct in noting that it's Aidy Bryant's "You hurt me today" that ties the whole thing together like some kind of grand, comedic rug. AKA, not a rug you'd buy at CVS.
