Gov. Deval Patrick is praising increased participation by Hispanic and black students in the SAT.

Patrick said participation by Hispanic students rose by more nearly 11 percent since last year while participation by black students was up more than 2 percent.

Massachusetts public high school students continued to outperform the national average on the 2014 exam.

The 2014 test results show Massachusetts public high school students had an average score of 507 in critical reading, up from 506 in 2013. The average score was 523 in math, compared with 522 in 2013.

The average writing score dipped 2 points from 500 in 2013 to 498 this year.

Participation in Advanced Placement exams rose by more than 7 percent.

Overall 80 percent of Massachusetts public high school students in the class of 2014 took the SAT.
