A truck with an industrial shredder will be set up Saturday morning on the corner of N. 6th St. and William St. across from New Bedford City Hall for anyone wishing to get rid of some documents.

Marissa Perez-Dormitzer, the District Recycling Coordinator for the Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District, told WBSM News that most participants bring documents which contain sensitive information.

"Typically people bring papers that they don't want to put out in their regular trash," said Perez-Dormitzer "old tax documents, bank statements, items like those that we want to be really careful about."

The fee for that service is $5 per box.

There's also an opportunity to safely get rid of information which may be stored electronically.

"They do destroy hard drives," said Perez-Dormitzer "there's a $5 fee to destroy a computer and that's another thing that we want to be careful of, our information on our computers, so that's a great opportunity to destroy an old hard drive."

Perez-Dormitzer says the company which handles the disposal, Doc Shredding Corporation, will also provide a Certificate of Destruction to those who participate.

Paper Shredding Day takes place from 9 a.m. to noon and kicks off a series of events that are being held so residents can dispose of items that don't get placed in the trash barrel or the recycling bin.

"There are other things that should be handled seperately," said Perez-Dormitzer "such as hazardous waste, we don't want that placed in the trash so that's why we offer this seperate event.

Tire Drop-off Day and Sharps Drop-off Day is open to Dartmouth and New Bedford residents only and will be held Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Shawmut Ave. Transfer Station at 1103 Shawmut Ave. in New Bedford.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day is open only to New Bedford, Freetown, and Dartmouth residents and is being held October 22 between 9 a.m. and noon at the Crapo Hill Landfill at 300 Samuel Barnet Blvd. in New Bedford.

National Drug Take-Back Day is also being held October 22 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at New Bedford Police Department Headquarters at 871 Rockdale Ave.
