There may be a settlement in the works in a controversial 2012 police-involved shooting in New Bedford.

A settlement hearing in the wrongful death suit of 15-year-old Malcolm Gracia has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 25th in New Bedford Superior Court. A jury trial had been scheduled to begin on February 24th, but the Standard-Times reported Saturday the trial had been canceled.

Gracia was shot and killed by New Bedford Police on Cedar Street near Temple Landing. Police had stopped Gracia after spotting him in a surveillance video using what they thought was a gang handshake.

During the incident, Gracia pulled out a hooked hunting knife and stabbed Detective Tyson Barnes. Other officers on the scene then opened fire on the suspect, killing him.

Barnes has recovered from his wounds.
