Serious Injury at New Bedford Seafood Processing Plant
NEW BEDFORD — A man was injured on the job Wednesday morning at a New Bedford seafood processing plant.
New Bedford Police confirm to WBSM News that officers responded to a report of an industrial accident at Sea Watch International Seafood at 15 Antonio L. Costa Avenue at about 6:16 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2.
Upon arrival, the male victim was unresponsive. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital. A police spokeswoman says specifics of the man's condition are unknown at this time.
Calls to Seawatch International have not been returned as of this writing.
A spokesman for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed to WBSM News that OSHA has opened an inspection at Sea Watch after being notified that a worker had been injured while working on a machine. The spokesman says the inspection is ongoing, and seeks to determine if there were any violations of workplace safety standards in connection with this incident.
In January 2014, 35-year-old Victor Gerena was killed when he was caught in machinery while cleaning a shellfish-shucking machine at Sea Watch International. Sea Watch was later cited for seven serious safety violations as a result of that death.
We will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
