A Rehoboth man reportedly sped and swerved through traffic before his motorcycle slammed into the back of a loaded dump truck and burst into flames on Rt. 495 in Raynham.

Tuesday night at about 11:10 p.m., state troopers from the Middleboro barracks responded to a motorcycle crash near Exit 8 southbound that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old motorcycle operator, according to a media release from Massachusetts State Police.

Preliminary investigation indicates the 2016 Yamaha YZFR1 motorcycle rear-ended a 2004 commercial dump truck hauling asphalt. As a result, the motorcycle became engulfed in flames and the operator was determined deceased at the scene. Prior to the crash, the motorcycle was seen swerving in and out of travel lanes at an extremely high rate of speed, the release stated.

State police said the name of the victim will not be released at this time.

The southbound side of the highway was closed for three-and-a-half hours. Traffic was detoured to the Exit 8 off-ramp and re-entered Route 495 South via the Exit 8 on-ramp.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police along with the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, the Crime Scene Services Section, the Bristol County State Police Detective Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section. Troopers were assisted on scene by MassDOT and by Raynham Fire and EMS.
