Providence Man Killed in Tiverton Industrial Accident
TIVERTON, R.I. (1420 WBSM) — A Providence man was killed Friday when he fell into a machine that separates sand from gravel.
The man has been identified as Selvin Martin Ovando Gamez, 29. He was working at the site of Tiverton Materials at 810 Fish Road.
According to a release from Tiverton Police Chief Patrick Jones, Gamez was standing on top of the machine when it became stuck. Jones said Gamez then fell into the machine while attempting to loosen the materials. He was then pulled out of the machine by nearby workers.
Tiverton Police responded to the scene at about 8:35 a.m. and found Gamez on the ground and unresponsive. The Tiverton Fire Department arrived and attempted to perform life-saving measures before Gamez was transported to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, where he was pronounced deceased.
Jones said both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were notified of the incident.
According to the company’s website, Tiverton Materials is an aggregate supplier that has handled projects on the SouthCoast in locations such as at Interstate 195 at Faunce Corner Road in Dartmouth, improvements to Fall River’s Braga Bridge, and runway work at the New Bedford Regional Airport.
