The Freetown restaurant formerly known as The Nephew's is getting set to reopen under new ownership and a new look.

According to Howie Mallowes, one of the Profile Tavern's owners, the highly anticipated restaurant will open to the public on Thursday, May 12.

"We might have a soft opening for a couple of days to get the kinks out," Mallowes said. "That would happen on May 10 and 11, then the restaurant would open to the general public on May 12."

Mallowes' latest stint in the SouthCoast restaurant world is a partnership with some other familiar names in the local restaurant industry: Jay Lanagan, Pat Long and Al Peters.

When it comes to restaurants in the Freetown area, there's not much competition, which is one of the reasons the group of owners had their eyes on The Nephew's once it went up for sale.

The new restaurant's name, Profile Tavern, is a nod to Freetown's iconic Profile Rock, which collapsed in 2019.

Mallowes said the menu won't change much from what was offered at The Nephew's.

"We're definitely doing the pizzas, a similar 12-inch thin crust. We're still going to have a prime rib. We'll still have some of the Italian dishes The Nephew's used to have, like, chicken parm and chicken, broccoli and ziti alfredo. We'll add in some stuff we have at Rose Alley Alehouse like the wings, chicken tenders and burgers. We'll add some seafood dishes like fried scallops."

All of the former staff from The Nephews was welcome to come back once the new restaurant was completed, according to the owners.

Gift cards from The Nephew's will be honored by Profile Tavern. Customers will be asked to bring in their paper gift certificates and have them exchanged for the more modern plastic gift cards.
