With the amount of fatal heroin overdoses on the Southcoast down, and the number of overdose reversals on the rise thanks to first responders, things are looking up in the fight against heroin and drug abuse.

But Carl Alves, director of Positive Action Against Chemical Addiction says there's still a long road ahead. Speaking on WBSM's "Taylor Cormier Show", Alves says heroin addiction is still a very large concern, but the abuse of opioids in the form of prescription medication remains prevalant.

Alves says awareness over the past few years has increased the proper disposal of unused prescription drugs.

Alves met with Congressman William Keating, Senator William Tolman, and others Tuesday to discuss ongoing solutions in the war against opiate drug addiction. Alves says he hopes to see more legislation geared towards the issue, and more outreach programs that educate addicts and their families.
