The body of a man has been recovered from an Acushnet conservation area following an apparent suicide.

Tuesday afternoon at 1:31 p.m. police were directed to the LaPalme Farm walking trails off Main Street by a female friend of a 50-year-old man, Acushnet Police Chief Christopher Richmond said in a release. The woman told police that her boyfriend was despondent and that she had located his vehicle on Blain Street near the entrance to the Buzzards Bay Coalition conservation land.

With assistance from the woman and from trail maintenance workers with the land trust, the man's body was located at around 1:56 p.m. Massachusetts State Police participated in the search and recovery, the release stated.

Richmond said the man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and that foul play is not suspected.

State police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and personnel from the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to assist in the investigation. Due to the remote location of the scene, a 4-wheel all-terrain vehicle was used to assist in removing the victim.

Richmond said no further information would be released.
