Police are actively investigating after a man was shot to death in the south end of New Bedford sometime early this morning. The Bristol County District Attorney's Office has confirmed that police are on the scene of a fatal shooting.

Early this morning there was a heavy police presence reported at Margin Street in New Bedford with crime tape cordoning the area and scanner reports of a homicide BOLO.

New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney's office and Homicide Unit prosecutors are actively investigating a fatal shooting which occurred in New Bedford early this morning between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., the DA's office confirmed at around 9:30 a.m.

New Bedford Police responded to 17 Margin Street early this morning and discovered a male had been fatally shot inside the multi-family building, the DA's office said.

The victim is an unidentified male. Based upon evidence gathered during the preliminary investigation, he was found to have suffered from multiple gunshot wounds, the DA's office said. The state Medical Examiner's Office will take custody of the body to perform an autopsy in the coming days.

The DA said no additional information will be released at this time as the homicide investigation remains active and ongoing. The identity of the victim will be released upon notification of his next of kin.
