PLYMOUTH — A fight that drew a large crowd to a beach in a village of Plymouth on Sunday appeared to be part of an organized “fight club,” police say.

Plymouth Police Captain Kevin Manuel confirmed to WBSM News that a large crowd of about “200 to 300 people” converged upon White Horse Beach Sunday afternoon at around 2:45 p.m. He said that by the time officers arrived on scene, “everyone took off.”

“There are no victims, no suspects, nobody’s come forward,” he said.

Manuel said that while they weren’t able to make any arrests, detectives do have photos and the incident is under investigation.

“It appeared to be some kind of fight club, something organized, with someone officiating,” he said.

Video posted to an Instagram account purporting to be of the White Horse Beach brawl showed two participants wearing boxing gloves with a third person appearing to officiate the fight.

Manuel said that even though it appeared both parties were willing participants in the fight, it can’t happen on a public beach.

“You can never consent in public like that to assault and battery,” he said. “Boxing matches, MMA, they’re all overseen by the state commission. You can’t consent to just having them on the beach.”

Manuel said it appears that the White Horse fight was part of a series of organized fights planned for Sunday, noting that a similar event happened at Narragansett Beach in Rhode Island.

According to WJAR 10, eight people – most of whom were under 18 – were taken into custody and charged at the Narragansett incident, which happened around 2 p.m. and drew a crowd of about 500 people. WJAR is also reporting none of those taken into custody were town residents.
