South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide in the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The judge in the case said yesterday the state had not proved that Pistorius was guilty of premeditated murder.

However, she indicated that Pistorius was negligent in firing the shots through the door of his bathroom that killed Steenkamp on February 14th, 2013.

Pistorius maintained that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder and feared for his life on the night he fired the shots.

Among the other verdicts announced by the court, the judge found Pistorius guilty of firing a gun inside a crowded restaurant in a separate incident.

But the judge found Pistorius not guilty of two other firearms charges.
