The Northeast Maritime Institute in Fairhaven hopes to offer a two-year Associates Degree program in Applied Nautical Science, but needs approval from the State Dept. Of Higher Education to do it.

Institute President Eric Dawicki sees the two year program as a way to provide a solid employment opportunity for young people perhaps not cut out to attend a four-year college...

The State Board of Higher Education has scheduled a hearing for Thursday at 10:30am in Boston on the Associate Degree proposal.

Dawicki says he's looking for public support.  He's hired a bus to transport supporters to Boston to attend the hearing.  The bus leaves at 8am Thursday from the K-Mart parking lot.
