The shoveling continues on the SouthCoast as families and neighbors try their best to clear the record-breaking snowfall we experienced during the Blizzard of '26.

Blizzard of ’26 Sparks Snow Creativity

In North Kingstown, Rhode Island, one family made the most of the snow days, creating a masterpiece that looks good enough to eat.

"My son loves pink sprinkle donuts from Dunkin," Becca Laptook said. "So we decided to make our own donut out of snow."

How the Family Made Their Giant Donut

"We made a big donut shaped mound and dug a hole through the center. We mixed water and pink food coloring and then painted the 'strawberry frosting' on with a brush," Laptook said.

Using food coloring is something their family does often during snowstorms, occasionally 'painting' the snow with it.

"This time, I knew I wanted to try to freeze the colored water beforehand and had heard about filling balloons with food coloring and water and putting them in the freezer," Laptook said. "Once frozen, you cut and peel off the balloons and are left with colored ice orbs. As I was trying to think of what to use them for, the pink sprinkle donut idea came to mind."

The sprinkles, though fun and festive, were the most time-consuming. "I think it took more than an hour to mix and fill the balloons and then they were in the freezer for a couple days," Laptook said.

"The night of the blizzard, it probably took an hour to peel off the balloons. Then once the snow was done on Tuesday we started to build and it probably took about 3 hours to make," she said.

Laptook admitted she and her family are no experts. Growing up in Dallas, she never had snow days. However, sculpting winter creations is something her family has really enjoyed over the years.

"We've made a giant turtle, a rainbow arch, and a 'snow shark,'" she said.

Community and Online Response

Their donut creation has brought joy to their friends and neighbors. "Everyone seems to love it! Our neighborhood enjoys seeing what we create and I feel a little pressure to make something big each snow storm," Laptook said.

"I think our town in particular has a special place in their hearts for Dunkin' or donuts in general because I posted the picture on the NK town Facebook page, and we have gotten about 5300 likes!" she said.
