No Freedom Fest At UMass Dartmouth This Year
There will be no Freedom Festival at UMass Dartmouth this year.
School spokesman John Hoey told WBSM News the school that they have major construction projects going on in the middle of campus and over by their athletic center and that combined with the financial challenges made it too difficult to host the event this year.
"Doing the event on campus was just not going to work," said Hoey "and the university, like many colleges and universities across the country, is facing a tight budget this year. So we didn't think it was appropriate to be spending scarce dollars on an event of this kind."
Hoey says they considered many alternatives but ultimately concluded that none of them were feasible.
"We investigated the possibility of doing an off-site event, we investigated the possibilty of doing a much down scaled event, but we just came to the conclusion that the combination of factors just prevented us from doing it this year," said Hoey.
Hoey says the event has been cancelled before, mainly due to weather, and that the decision about weather or not to host the event is made on year by year basis.
