A U.S. senator is pressing the Pentagon to turn over detailed information about sexual assault cases at major U.S. bases following an Associated Press investigation into the military's handling of sex crimes in Japan.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York wants case information from Fort Hood in Texas, Naval Air Station Norfolk in Virginia, the Marine Corps' Camp Pendleton in California, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

Gillibrand made the request in a letter Monday to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

AP's investigation, which was based on internal military documents it first requested in 2009, found a pattern of inconsistent judgments and light penalties at bases in Japan.

Gillibrand, who's led efforts in Congress to address military sexual crimes, told Hagel she expects a more timely response. (Associated Press)
