
New Hampshire’s Mt. Monadnock Among Most-Climbed in the World
At 3,165 feet, New Hampshire's Mount Monadnock is not the tallest mountain in the world, but it certainly does tower over everything else in the neighborhood.
According to New Hampshire State Parks, "Mount Monadnock or Grand Monadnock is a mountain in the town of Jaffrey, New Hampshire," that reaches "nearly 1,000 feet higher than any other mountain peak within 30 miles."
Monadnock State Park is "surrounded by thousands of acres of protected highlands." Monadnock's "bare, isolated, and rocky summit provides expansive views."
In 1987, Mount Monadnock was designated a National Natural Landmark. The park offers year-round recreational opportunities.

Yankee's NewEngland.com calls Mount Monadnock "one of the most-climbed mountains in the world." The site says, "Thanks both to its accessibility and its stunning views, New Hampshire's Mount Monadnock is one of the most popular hikes in the world."
Yankee says Mount Monadnock "is rivaled in popularity only by Japan's Mount Fuji."
"Plus, the views, reaching all the way to the Boston skyline and north to Mount Washington are worth the trip in themselves," says Yankee.
New Hampshire State Parks says, "Monadnock, which comes originally from the Abnacki Native American word for 'mountain that stands alone,' is now a standard geological term for any singular mountain that rises above the surrounding plain."
Writers Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Mark Gwain and Abbott Thayer found inspiration from Mount Monadnock.
Camping and hiking are permitted at Monadnock State Park, but not pets. Reservations for hiking permits are recommended during busy seasons. Visit the park's website for more details.
