
New Bedford North End Shooting Leaves Teen Injured
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford Police are investigating after a 17-year-old was shot at a park in the city’s Near North End Tuesday night.
According to police, officers responded to Coffin Avenue for a report of a shooting just after 11 p.m. on July 22. They said the victim was located and taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police said no arrests have been made and the incident remains under investigation, but also stated that “preliminary investigation has revealed no indications of an additional public safety risk in the area.”

Ward 2 Candidate Responds to Violence
Scott Pemberton, who is running for the Ward 2 city council seat, put out a statement on the incident, noting that the victim was a “17-year-old minor" and that the shooting took place at Riverside Park.

Pemberton called it “another tragic reminder of the violence that has steadily risen throughout Ward 2 over the past year and a half” and said “over the past 18 months, we have seen an unacceptable uptick in shootings, assaults, and violent incidents across our neighborhoods.”
Giesta: "Heartbroken" by Shooting
Ward 2 Councilor Maria Giesta issued the following statement Wednesday morning:
"I am heartbroken by the recent shooting that occurred in Riverside Park. My prayers are with the victim, his family and the entire community impacted by this senseless act of violence. As your Ward Councilor, I remain committed to working closely with the New Bedford Police Department and programs like the New Bedford Shannon Outreach Partnership to prevent violence and to provide support to our at-risk youth. Together we are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of all residents and to build a stronger, safer Ward 2."
