New Bedford’s Summer Food Program is expanding this year to include a new dinner program that will provide free dinners to children aged 18 and younger.

This dinner program will be at Montes Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7 pm and the free dinners will be given out of Izzy’s Food Truck. Dinners will be served at Montes Park rain or shine.

The Summer Food Program will also still be running in the parks and playgrounds all throughout New Bedford, serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Summer Food Program has been providing free meals for children under 18 at various parks and playgrounds in New Bedford for many years now, and call themselves the “food that’s in when school’s out.”

Besides just the free meals, these sites also offer sports, games, and arts and crafts for the children’s entertainment. The program starts on June 19 and ends August 23.

The kick-off events for the Summer Food Program will be held on Thursday, June 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Montes Park and Friday, June 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brooklawn Park.

In the case of bad weather or rain, lunch will still be provided during normal lunchtime hours at these five sites:  McCoy Rec Center, Brooklawn Park, Riverside Park, Roberto Clemente Park, and West Beach Pavilion.
